The details of insurance claims in the wake of Harvey

With the billions of dollars in damage caused by hurricanes Harvey and Irma, it comes as no surprise that countless Texas residents are now in need of repairs on homes, cars and businesses. Those left in the aftermath may wonder what property will receive insurance coverage. Just as with any type of damage, it is generally wise to look at all of the fine print in order to put the best foot forward.

While millions desperately sought safety from the weather extremes just months ago, Texas insurance companies braced themselves for another type of storm: a surge of insurance claims. Last August, The New York Times focused on the issue surrounding car insurance and the high number of car owners filing claims. Unlike homeowners' insurance, which typically does not cover flood damage, most auto policies do -- however, there is no law requiring Texas drivers to obtain comprehensive auto coverage. The Times pointed out that those with only the minimum required coverage would likely not qualify for claims.

To ensure a smoother process for those affected by Harvey and Irma, The Consumer Federation of America provided a resource including basics on insurance claims payments. The CFA urged consumers to take note of claim numbers and to follow up on the process. When it came to the repairs themselves, the resource explained that many insurance companies offer their own repair programs; while these programs can help speed up the process, The CFA notes that most are to the insurers' advantage. Consumers should be aware of this aspect when considering the pros and cons of repair contracts. Experts also warn consumers that these repair programs often do not fully compensate for damages, and encourage those affected by the storms to consider all options before making major decisions.
